Forward thinking

Two areas Pres needs to keep an eye on are cloud-computing and virtualization. Both are significant shifts in the way we use computer technology. Cloud-computing would include services such as google docs, even web-based MMOs, and Web 2.0 apps like Facebook. Virtualization is the use of one server to host one or more virtual servers from within. This has the potential to lower server costs and create a more manageable network environment.

64 Bit printing

Via the following post I was able to get 64 bit printing going at pres-net. In the case of the t642 driver I had to alter the file in order for the driver to have the identical name from 32bit to 64bit versions:

The print server must have both x86 and x64 drivers to be able to serve them to clients. The driver for the architecture of the server can be installed the usual way. The driver for the other architecture must be installed from a computer using that same architecture. You then need to open the "Printers" share on your print server from that other computer and add the driver in the server properties.
Here's an example. You have a Windows Server 2003 running on a x86 processor and Windows Vista clients running on a x64 processor. Install the x86 driver directly on the server. Log on a Vista computer (using an account with sufficient privilege to access the server!). Open \\PrintServerName\Printers in Windows Explorer. Go to File, Server Properties. In the Drivers tab, click on Add. Select only the x64 architecture and browse to find your driver. The x64 will be uploaded to the x86 server.
Please note however that both x86 and x64 drivers must have the exact same name! "HP LaserJet 2200 PCL 6" and "HP LaserJet 2200 PCL6" are regarded as totally different drivers! If they have the same name, they will appear automatically in additional drivers for both architectures in your printer's sharing properties.

Print manager

Needs to be loaded on phs-bdc01(Print Server) Once loaded we should be able to track print jobs network-wide. What policies if any should be implemented regarding student printing?

A/V Consolodation

A/V Standardized Room scenario:

• VHS No longer supported by 2010, converted to digital on request
• DVD media played through Computer: Viable network-wide solution in place as of Fall09
• Blue ray supported through either digital conversion or portable player
• Closed circuit directly through connection to projector
• TV Channels through receiver
